The season leapt into action on Sunday, with the U16 Boys travelling to Deer Park, Cirencester for their first triangular tournament of the season.
With very little practice and game time under their belts, along with only 10 players, it was going to be an uphill battle.
First up were Devizes and the need to hit the ground running was vital… The Boys did just that. Elijah, Laurie, Jacob and Max D played some beautiful hockey, with brilliant movement, linking up together effortlessly, carving open the Devizes defence. Elijah laid several goals on a plate for Laurie to finish clinically, with Laurie scoring 4. Max D was always a threat as he attacked, dribbling past many a defender, finishing smartly, scoring 3. The final score 8-2.
Cirencester were next up and with only a 20 minute break and no rotations available, the going was tough.
The Boys lost their shape in the first 10 minutes with Cirencester scoring early, with many a missed tackle as their player ran through many to finish well. However, the basics and shape, were brought back and the boys began to link up well again, with every member of the team playing a part. Goals flowed again, with the score at half time 3-1. The final 25 minutes laid ahead of us, Cirencester having the luxury of rolling substitutes, the boys shattered. The need to be tight in defence was expressed and the boys did just that as they battled well. 2 early goals were scored putting the game out of reach or so we thought. Cirencester rallied well in the closing minutes, however, the team hung on and won 5-3.
This was an outstanding effort playing the entire tournament with just 10 players. The opposition were never able to dominate with their extra man. Every player played a key role in the success, no matter what position. However, a special mention to Chris Byrne who stepped up, after a busy morning of other sporting commitments to play a sterling role in defence. Chris was playing up an age group, and not once did he look out of place.
Boys where possible please come to training, bring your friends, let’s keep going.
