Thanks for your message!
We will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.
Welcome to the February edition of the CHC newsletter. We are in the midst of a busy season, so read on for the latest news from our wonderful club. We’d like to express our thanks to our club sponsors, Cheltenham College, Root Group, Trefurn and Y1, for their support this season. Read more about our sponsors below.
We are delighted to invite our valued Vice Presidents and Patrons to our annual gathering on Saturday March 22nd at Balcarras Pavilion.
The event will commence at 12.30pm with an introduction and buffet lunch. We invite you to stay to watch the Men’s 1s, who will compete in a league match against Clifton Robinson’s 2s at 2pm. Following, the Women’s 1s will play top-of-the-table Reading at 4pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with friends of CHC. We do hope you can join us. Please RSVP below so we can cater accordingly.
The Club is very grateful to the Honourable Company of Gloucestershire Charitable Trust for a £750 grant towards the purchase of the Veo camera and stand. The camera films matches autonomously and then uses AI to follow the ball and put together a video of matches that coaches can use to make clips for coaching purposes and youth players can use to provide evidence for GCSE Physical Education.
The presentation was made by Mr Duncan Munro to Rachel Chicken in front of some of our U16 Girls squad.
Great news! A second ex-club player has been selected to play for England in India for the next round of 2024/25 FiH Pro League matches. Ellis Robson followed a very similar path to Jacob Payton through Cheltenham Junior HC and CHC. Ellis was part of Cheltenham squads that won the U14 and U16 National Championships, the U16 National Indoor Championships and the team were runners-up in the U18 National Championships. He represented the Men’s 1s in the National League before moving to Cardiff Met and he now plays for Loughborough University. Ellis has represented England at U16, U18 and U21. In 2018, and won the prestigious Hockey Writers’ Club U16 Boys Award given annually to a boy who has made an outstanding contribution to hockey within his club and school environment. We wish him well!
The men’s 1s remain in 3rd position, having won 9, drawn 1, and lost 4.
The men’s 2s sit in 12th position, having won 1, drawn 1, and lost 12.
The men’s 3s have moved up to 5th position, having won 9 and lost 5.
The men’s O35s were given a bye in Round 4 and will play the quarter-final on Sun 9 March.
The men’s O45s had a walkover against Stratford in Round 2 and have been waiting to play Round 3 against Solihull. This is now planned as an away match on Sunday 23 February.
Women’s 2s
The women’s 2s have enjoyed a stronger run of form in recent weeks, and their hard work is finally being rewarded. The team sits in 8th place, having won 2, drawn 7 and lost 5.
Women’s 3s
The women’s 3s are currently in second place, and are in a tough top-of-the-table battle with Blockley, who they play this coming weekend at Balcarras at 12.30pm.
Women’s 4s
We couldn’t be prouder of the women’s 4s who sit in 1st place in their league. Having played 11 games, they have a goal difference of +67!
Over the festive period, 3 youth teams participated in the Indoor Hockey UK tournament at the University of Nottingham. The U18 Girls played extremely well, finishing 5th overall behind clubs and invitation teams, who all had junior internationals playing for them. The U16 Girls and U16 boys teams were there to participate rather than compete with the strong South East clubs and invitation teams, who were there to win. The CHC participants enjoyed the tournament and gained plenty of experience including one of the boys playing as a GK for the first time.
The U16 Boys have won their National Championships matches against Oxford Hawks, 7-0, and Telford & Wrekin, 3-0, in order to progress to the quarter-final, which will be a match against Reading on Sun 23 Feb. West League matches will also resume after half term. The U16 Boys also had a friendly with the U14 Boys in order to help with their development.
The U16 Girls Cobras (A team) played the first round of the Tier 1 Supra League Plate against Bristol Firebrands winning 4-1. They will play the second round against Isca on Sun 23 Feb.
The U16 Girls Cheetahs (B team) have been busy with 3 matches since Christmas. The first was a Tier 2 West League match against Gloucester, which they won 6-0, leaving them in 4th place with games in hand. They have recently played 2 matches in the Avon Junior Hockey League; the first was a 6-0 win over Redlands but the second was a 1-6 loss to Wotton. They are currently top of the league on goal difference but Wotton have a game in hand.
The U18 Girls have had a couple of byes in the Tier 2 National Championships but will play Old Georgians in the Quarter Final after half term.

A huge thank you to our club sponsors this season. Read more about our sponsors, here.
We are delighted to say that individual players can now be sponsored at CHC. This is a fun way of fundraising, while increasing the profile of local businesses. You can see the players who have been sponsored, here.
Ever wondered what a CHC fantasy league might look like? Wonder no more! It’s back for the second year and highly competitive. Women’s Club Captain, Tegan Lodde, is steadfast at the top of the table. There’s something fishy going on! Check it out, here.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more updates as the season progresses. If you have any feedback for the club, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We hope to see you at a home game soon.
Warm regards,
The CHC team
